Aquamarines, amethysts, peridots, tourmalines, tanzanites, citrines and many more form a palette of colour to enchant and delight. So here is a brief tour of these gorgeous gems...
Aquamarine. This dainty sky blue stone has seen a real renaissance. It's wonderful paired with highly polished white gold or platinum, and contrasted with delicate pavé set diamonds to give such a feminine elegance. Legends quote it as the treasure of mermaids empowered to keep safe those at sea!
Amethyst. One of the richest colours of the semi-precious stones, it features in the crown jewels and was once the preserve of royalty. Historically it was considered an antidote to inebriation; it's name is derived from the Greek "amethystos" literally meaning not drunken.
Peridot. A gentle lively green colour, peridot also looks fantastic paired with aquamarine and white gold. The Romans called it "evening emerald" as its colour was still visible by lamplight!
Tourmaline. A varied jewel that occurs in all colours; pinks, reds, blues, greens and watermelon. It can mimic the look of other gems; many stones in the Russsian Crown Jewels are not rubies as originally thought but red tourmalines or "rubellite".
Tanzanite. This fantastic purple blue stone is found in only one area in the world, near the foothills of mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. As designers, we prefer to set it in precious white metals to show off its rich tones to the full.
Citrine. Derived from the French "citron" this stone is most favoured when a warm golden yellow. It has a gentle lustre and a mellow relaxed tone which works equally well in yellow or white gold.
As well as featuring in some of our more exotic designs, many of these stones are set into our act gold and sterling silver collections, making their luxury rather affordable. Enjoy.
